The bigger picture is that I want to check the runtime code signature of the process that owns this service. I have made some progress on the issue, but I've hit a roadblock. My first attempt involved using the launch.h APIs to retrieve all launchd processes, find the mach service of interest and get the PID from there. This works when the provider process is started as a user, as root or as a user using launchctl... but fails when started as root using launchctl. I've given up on this approach since I understand that as a user I have no access to services managed by the root launchd process. My second attempt involves appending the PID of the target process to its service name and iterating over all service names using bootstrap_info(). This would work quite nicely, but it appears that bootstrap_info() has been deprecated in Leopard. Is there another way to accomplish this? Is there a Leopard-and-up friendly way of listing all (including root managed) service names from a user process? We need to pass large'ish (>4K) blocks between the app and the kext. Presently the data structures passed from the app to the kernel include pointers. Those pointers are then mapped using IOMemoryDescriptor::withAddressRange(). So the obvious problem is how can we create data structures that are 32/64 bit neutral that can still pass pointer references to a 32-bit kernel? That is, on some platforms the app will be 32-bit while others 64-bit, while the kernel is 32-bit. For example, the first parameter to withAddressRange() is of type vm_address_t which is an unsigned int (4 bytes). How does that work when the address comes from a 64-bit application where the address is 8 bytes? I have been reading the 64-bit porting guide, but I have not found how to fix this problem. Any references or suggestions are most welcome. How to portably handle signals in multithreaded programs is actually very well documented in the O'Reilly pthreads book (both the final, standard version, and the common Draft 4 version, which describes the HP/SGI implementation of pthreads version 4 prior to the standardization of pthreads). If, on the other hand, you're actually getting a SIGSEGV because you are dereferencing unmapped regions, or SIGBUS because you are attemting to write read-only regions or read non-readable regions, or SIGILL because you are trying to execute in a non-execute segment (such as a stack), that will be treated as a hard exception and delivered to the thread that caused it.
