I also downloaded the MacOSX Darwin developer package which states quite plainly that this package lets you compile xnu, to no avail. It would seem rather strange to be required to install and run Darwin simply to compile the kernel that will run on both Darwin and OSX. On a side note, I am not worried about the overheating. I will be monitoring it closely and can give it adiquite ventilation. This is for a special purpose where i simply need the laptop to continue running but do not have room for the monitor to be open. If loginwindow.app (as it is the only thing running new at the time the kernel receives the power savings commands) is what loads the user power preferences, which tells the kernel how to respond to the ibook lid closing, then what API does it call? There is some method that a user-level application uses to configure the power savings of the kernel. Wether it be a driver or the kernel itself that controls the sleep mode there is a user serviceable way to tell the kernel/driver to do it or not. But besides that, there are other things I would like to do with the kernel for fun so I would like to be able to figure out how to successfully compile it anyway. You are trying to compile a kernel version which expects a certain version of the compiler be installed, without having that compiler. Believe me, this will be the least of your worries. You will not always be able to build and/or run that code on any existing binary systems that are currently installable. Stick with the versions of projects that match the released versions of Darwin/Mac OS X if you want to be able to build and/or use them reliably. Perhaps you will know of another way to accomplish what I am trying to do, but my purpose for recompiling the kernel, right now, is to disable the sleep feature when my ibook lid is put down. I want to modify the kernel so instead of going to sleep it simply turns off the display to prevent overheating the screen and continues to run. I know the loginwindow.app application is what gives the kernel the sleep options because my computer will not go to sleep before that application loads, but I cannot find any API calls to re send that information and disable it again. The machine may not cool effectively enough when the lid is closed, regardless of the screen being dim. In that case, the platform drivers probably won't let you do what you are trying to do. It is they, the platform and device drivers, not the kernel nor loginwindow.app, that make the call. The kernel simply provides a means to reflect the current power states to the different components that are interested. The actions to be taken in response to those state transitions is up to the drivers. From this perspectve, the kernel is also a driver, and sleeps/wakes up the CPU(s) in response to these requests. The reason things are different after loginwindow than before, is that many EngerySaver preferences are maintained per-user. The version of this identifier (and it's backwards-compatibility version) is bumped with each new release, so if you declare a dependency on this, your driver will only load on a single release of Mac OS X / Darwin (whichever kernel matches the version you asked for). This is not generally a good choice unless you really want to lock the software into running on a single OS version. The other four identifiers cover the major food groups of the Darwin kernel. The exact list of which APIs go with which identifier isn't available, but they pretty much map to the headers in Kernel.framework: com.apple.kernel.iokit covers APIs in Kernel.framework/Headers/IOKit/* com.apple.kernel. libkern covers APIs in Kernel.framework/Headers/libkern/* com.apple.kernel.mach covers APIs in Kernel.framework/Headers/mach/* com.apple.kernel.bsd covers APIs in .../sys/*, .../net*/*, .../kern/*, .../bsd/*, ../vfs/* and several more. If you include a header from one of these places, you need to make sure and list the associated identifier in your kext's OSBundleLibraries property. We are working to make this more obvious (like, putting the CFBundleIdentifer right in the headers or in readme files!) The general rule is that I/O Kit drivers depend on: IOKit, Libkern, and one or more IOKit families. [sorry for the cross posting] Over the last couple of months I have been seeing emails on the the darwin developement lists from various developers regarding latency in Darwin. It appears that they are finding some issue with latency when using the normal IOKit methods. I personally never did get a clear understand of what was causing the latency but it seems to be driving people to do more work at direct interrupt time (more code going into IOFilterInterruptEventSource::Filter) or for some skipping the use of the IOKit provided workloops. I personally see this as a dangerous trend for two main reasons (more exist)... 1) Apple may have a issue in the kernel that needs to be fixed or improved and people are coding around it instead of working with Apple to resolved it. 2) More people doing stuff at direct interrupt time is going to cause worse behavior for those following the generally accepted/specified methods (using work loops and doing stuff at indirect interrupt or better yet doing it in worker a thread). Direct interrupt time holds up the entire system (I believe all processors). So spending much time here can impact total system performance. If we have people heading down this path we are going to have problems IMHO. Basically if more people start hogging the system then others may be forced to do the same. Please only do stuff at direct interrupt time if no other way exists to achieve what you need to do.
