And during that time, when I want to gdb -p Finder_pid. The box hang ! What's the tricky then ? If the GUI is unresponsive, SSH into the machine and run GDB from there. If you can't SSH, you should attach with the kernel debugger. random functions crash NKE

Got around this by just removing the function and doing the dirty there instead of a separate function. This NKE I also create threads and works great. Then I created a new one for a whole different project, and have it create a thread when it first starts up and it is crashing. And I have also 2 SYSCTL Procedure functions defined, one of them works without crashing, but the other crashes. Is there some kind of threading going haywire, or am I doing something wrong where it likes some functions and hates others? This email sent to site_archiver(a)lists.apple.com

The basic problem is that the kernel is unwilling to run driver threads after a panic. Rebooting the system requires running on or more driver threads. The indirect way is to used the system's watchdog timer. Below is some sample source to control the watchdog. I searched on assembly files *.s but no fruitful results. In which file I should look in? Where should I patch the kernel to restart it? What instructions should I write to restart it ? If we look in in to the System Preferences -> Energy Saver->Options we can restart our machine on daily/weekly basis. I think that code should I use but where it ? My post was therefore inconsistent and bogus. To illustrate my setup, here's the pseudocode: Parent: sigaction(SIGCHLD, ...) while(1) { ioctl(mydev, BLOCKING_RECEIVE, &blob); if(blob.msg == PARENT_SIGNALED) { // was interrupted because child got a signal child_was_signaled(); } else { // we were woken up by the child process with interesting info // ...work on blob } } ...[snip]... I erroneously concluded that the parent was actually blocked in the semaphore_wait() and wasn't woken up. The real reason, upon further reflection, is the classic "missed wakeup" scenario: the signal came and went before the parent process went to sleep unconditionally. I'm thinking of reworking this to handle the real cause of the child's signal in kernelspace. That would do away with the asynchronous signal. I still need to handle child death avoiding the same race condition. I wonder how one gets notification, in the kernel, of child death...
