It's all pretty spiffy for a newbie, so I was feeling pretty chuffed with myself for a while back there ... trouble is that my text is left justified and I need it to be center justified. I'm currently using the NSAttributredString drawWithRect method but it doesn't appear to have the facility to handle text justification natively, so I'm thinking that I should be using a different method. Can anyone suggest a suitable one, either one that provides the pixel width of the string as it would appear in the bitmap image, so that I can calculate the correct origin so that it appears center justified, or one that handles justification natively? Thanks in advance for your advice and guidance ... and failing that, just for giving the opportunity to ask the question (it helps to clarify it in my own mind !) ScrollingRichText was written as an example of some of the new FxPlug API that we added in FCP 6.0, so it uses features that aren't available in 5.1.4. In particular, it uses the FxTimingAPI to find out the duration of your generator in the timeline; it uses this duration to calculate how much to scroll the current frame. The idea is that the text is just below the canvas on the first frame, and just above the canvas on the last frame. Since FCP 5.1.4 doesn't implement the FxTimingAPI, the plugin is probably always drawing the text outside of the canvas. If you change the "percentThroughEffect" value to 0.5, you should see the text appear. You will miss out on some other niceties by running the plugin in 5.1.4. For example, the plugin will dynamically show and hide some parts of its UI depending on whether you have chosen "simple text" or "RTF file"; this feature only works in FCP 6.0 and later. But hopefully the above fix will get you drawing some text, and you can take it from there. Using a XML (unfortunately) FCP always uses the file path and takes the TC/ TC Type/Reel from the QT file's TC tracks (Source/Aux1/Aux2) itself - and will overwrite any value in the XML. We have a plugin that creates QuickTime movies containing time code tracks, and imports them into FCP using XML, where we also specify the time code information. Could someone explain how FCP determines which time code information to import in this case? Are QuickTime time code tracks always preferred? Mixing Compressor versions

This is working fine from Compressor 3.x. But we also have a few Compressor 2.3 machines still (older versions of Final Cut Studio) and they are having trouble submitting jobs. Either the job fails to submit completely or it submits and then a few computers almost immediately give Quicktime errors, which cause the entire process to fail. I have seen KB articles about incompatibilities between 2.1 and 2.3, but nothing about 2.3 and 3.0. This email sent to site_archiver(a)lists.apple.com

More interlacing woes in FCP 6.0.2

This bug has been there since 5.1 it seems and continues to be there in 6.0.2 We often need to apply our plugins to sequences instead of directly to clips For example: because FxPlugs cannot extend durations of a clip, people using Twixtor need to pad their clip to the desired duration of the extended clip in one sequence, and then apply Twixtor in another. Another example: let's say we have two different plugins that both deal with multiple images in time. In order to descrease the calculation time we often suggest to customers to apply one plugin in one sequence, render that sequence, then drop that prerendered sequence into another and apply the second plugin. IN this way you don't needlessly recalculate frames (because both plugins process multiple input images to create a final output image, if you don't do this then many frames get recalculated as the second plugin evaluates multiple images of the first-applied plugin). ======================================================================== Anyhow, that's just motivation for you to understand that we need the following bug fixed: If you apply an FxPlug to a sequence within another sequence, then the input bitmap is always reported as progressive (FxFieldOrder==0) and is indistinguishable from a clip that is progressive that should be processed. This is very problematic. To repeat: if the input is a CLIP (and not a sequence), then the input field order is always correct (the field order on the input image given to -renderOutput) and so is the output field order (the field order on the outputImage given to -renderOutput. (of course getting to all the fields of an interlaced clip within a progressive sequence is problematic, but that's another bug report ;-)) If my FxPlug is applied to a sequence (instead of clip) within another sequence, then the input field order is always reported as progressive, regardless of whether the input sequence is set to have fields or not (and the input field order should be set to whatever field setting the INPUT sequence has as its setting). Another problem happens with sequences dropped into clipwells. If I drop an interlaced sequence into a clipwell on a clip within an interalced sequence, then the field order for the input is reported as lower. For the first field in time I get both the input and output field is set to 2. For the second field in time I get that the input field is 2 (wrong) and the output field is 1 (correct). Off the top of my head, I don't know of a way. One really lame workaround you might try is to have a hidden parameter - say a slider or something - and just nudge it's value when you want things to update. I'm not sure if that would work, but it might cause something to kick in and update. I think it would because your - parameterChanged: method will then be called so you can update any parameters that rely on the value of that one, and you'd need to know the time in there. Sorry, it's taken me a while to try out your timer idea - seems to work okay as far as getting the timer to force a redraw on the custom parameter UI. The only problem is that when you shift along the timeline to a previously cached frame, [actionAPI currentTime] doesn't return the correct time - it seems to just return the last time the effect did any processing. So for example, go to frame n, let the effect process, shift to frame n+1, let the effect process, then go back to frame n, currentTime still returns n+1. Any way to force it to update the time? I'm sorry, I still don't understand the interaction you're describing. This all sounds very bizarre to me. But to answer your original question, about redrawing your button, here's one method that I can think of. (I don't think this would be the ideal solution, though.) You could set up an NSTimer to call back into your plugin periodically. In your timer callback, you could call -startAction:, followed by -currentTime: to check if the current time is the same time as the last time you redrew your UI. If it's not, then you could call -setNeedsDisplay: on your button, and the OS will tell it to redraw. Then, of course, call -endAction. In your -drawRect: method, get the current time and save it for the next time your callback gets called. It sounds like what you really want, though, is a way to set keyframes on check boxes. You're not the only person who wants that, so it's possible we might add that functionality in the future. (That's not a guarantee, though! :) ) I'm still not getting why you need to set keyframes on the previous and next frame, though. It doesn't sound like something a typical user would understand, either. Would it be better to have your own timeline in your custom control? (Again, not a perfect solution, but a workable one.) The thing which always is constant/reliable is that projects on FCP launch are listed correctly, added projects will show up in most of the times, but sometimes not. I'll try further maybe I'll find a rule. I've tried to reproduce this problem via your procedure, but I can not get the problem to occur. It's somehow good to hear that you don't experience any problems. Could you describe what you add to the projects and how many projects are open? Maybe that could give us some idea what's going wrong here. FWIW we're creating a project at my organization that uses that new AE extensively and we've not seen the problem you describe. Like Eryk pointed out the only time we don't get a project is when it hasn't been initially saved. In our application we're sending things to the bin regularly and can do it multiple times without saving the project in its modified (but having been saved in the past) state. As said the "untitled" stuff is easy to understand as there is "only" a temp file path. The other thing is very hard to reproduce - it happens or doesn't happen (both on my machine and two other machines outside my office). The only random rule we figured out is that this will happen only if the project is modified (i.e. some sequence is added) thru AE. I have no idea what the difference is. I can send you the app under NDA, maybe you see the same thing - maybe not and it's a configuration thing on the machines we used to test the app. But as said the Apple example code and our code do give the same result (still using Tiger). Projects that have never been saved to a file will not be reported in the open projects list. This is (in part) because the only way to refer to projects via apple events is with a file path or reference. I have never seen the behavior you describe - i.e. projects "disappearing" from the list. I will do some investigation, but without a repeatable test case there is not a lot I can do.
