Developing OS X bluetooth using Cocoa-Java

Hi there all! I'm new to OS X development (just completed the Cocoa-Java example) and have been looking for an application to write. I've decided that an application using Bluetooth and my mobile in a similar vein to the Address Book.app. I've already invested considerable time learning Java (which I develop on my Mac), and would really like to use the Cocoa-Java hybrid language on OS X to write this bluetooth app. So: 1) Is there any way I can develop the Bluetooth functionality on OS X using Java? All the APIs and examples I've seen seem to be in what I assume is Objective-C/Cocoa. 2) Can anyone point me in the direction of somewhere I can go to learn where to start coding for Bluetooth features? Hello Tommy, Can you tell me more about the problem ? Is it that rfcommEventListener is never called ? Or is it called but with no data ? If it is not called ever I would check if your code runs in a runloop (usully this involves calling CFRunloopRun() at the end of your main()). If it gets called with no data, or if the data does not make sense I would check the sender, maybe the problem lies there. ... Typically that entails calling CFRunLoopRun() at the end of you main() routine. Announcement: Bluetooth for Java

Hi all, I'd like to formally announce "Bluetooth for Java" by Ranjith Antony and myself. It's truly a long overdue book about how to create wireless applications using Bluetooth and Java. The book extensively covers the APIs of the official Java Bluetooth Specification (the JSR-82), but it also includes examples using J2ME and J2SE. A good book usually has good examples, so in the book we provides examples on how to do the following: 1. How to turn your Bluetooth-enabled phone or PDA into a Bluetooth network browser 2. How to turn a desktop PC into a Bluetooth Print Server 3. How send files between two Bluetooth devices 4. How to set up and configure a Bluetooth network simulator 5. How to encrypt your data transmissions In the last three chapters of the book, we provide information on three hardware devices that have Bluetooth and Java built in: the SND Micro BlueTarget, the Ericsson BlipNet, and the Psinaptic PsiNode. Instead of using the raw IOKit APIs for device access, we've provided a more object-oriented wrapper around them with (hopefully) easier to use functions and ObjC objects to access the various Bluetooth layers. To find out about any device (i.e. baseband connection) coming and going, use IOBluetoothRegisterForDeviceConnectNotifications() or +[IOBluetoothDevice registerForConnectNotifications:selector:]. I've got the December developer tools but I don't seem to have the Bluetooth Framework. Isn't it included? I do think that Apple should get support for it asap, and preferably make the sound manager glue for it too. People are already using their bluetooth headsets for telephony, and I doubt that interrest will decline any time soon. It would be sad if it couldn't be (easily) done on a Mac OS X machine. That sounds similar to what I've seen with a couple of different pieces of hardware. The problem I suspect is due to the way that the SCO connection works. It was designed with no retry mechanism. This unfortunately leads to various problems such as glitches, stutters and dropouts in different environments given that the 2.4GHz band is in such high use. In my personal experience, I haven't found a headset that worked well enough for my everyday use. Given that a lot of the requests we've had for headset support is for speech recognition use, in my opinion, there's no way that the hardware that I've tested would have good enough sound quality for that use. Now that IP telephony is starting to become more popular, it seems like more uses for the technology are opening up. Are there any decent IP telephony solutions for Mac OS X currently? Also, I'd love to hear from somebody who has a Bluetooth headset really works well. I do think that Apple should get support for it asap, and preferably make the sound manager glue for it too. We have two of them running on both Jaguar and Linux, plus another device for Palm. We've got Linux and Palm all talking to each other nicely doing PPP and all kinds of things, I haven't gotten around to writing much for the Mac yet. Apple's current applications seem to focus around connect to a phone, not a random general-purpose computer. Well my app is just a monitoring tool that detects the coming and going of peripherals. So I don't need to talk to the devices I just need them to trigger the notifications. I depends on what the client application is: For phone applications, you will need a Bluetooth capable phone and perhaps a cellular account. (Dial-up, OBEX, etc.) For computer to computer communication, including perhaps development of a protocol which will one day become part of an embedded device you can use 2 Macs each with a Bluetooth dongle (like the D-Link).
