Hi Chris and thank you very much for your comments. I really appreciate them. This now makes sense to me. The Finder/OS is seeing the top row of my screen grab as untagged, thats why all icons preview the same, the numbers are still the same. As they say - only the names have been changed. When I select Get Info, Finder knows about the embedded profiles, and uses them for other functions, but it must be unwilling or unable to access that info for the Icon Preview, as you stated. The bottom row of my screen grab was converted so those numbers did change and whichever profile is now being assigned shows those changes. The Finder is still treating the document as untagged. Arrrgh! My theory, ah yes, my theory is that Dinosaurs are really small on one end, really large in the middle and really small again on the other end. This is my theory. When I search I have 4 directories/folders called Metadata - none of them relates to Photoshop or Icons. One relates to Cache but contains only Safari data. The closest one is System/Library/Metadata but the only thing in there is com.apple.finder.legacy.mdlabels Labels, but nothing about Icons. Thank you, David

Photoshop CC (14.0) no longer writes resources because Apple has deprecated all the resource APIs. Photoshop CC continues to write thumbnails in the data fork of the file (EXIF, XMP, etc.), but no longer writes resource fork thumbnails. MacOS Finder/metadata service have problems extracting resource thumbnails that can lead to some files and directories not showing thumbnails until the OS thumbnail/metadata cache is reset -- and Photoshop CC at least avoids those OS problems. MacOS Finder also has oddities in it's thumbnail display, and the Finder "show icon preview" option needs to be enabled for it to show thumbnails from the data fork, or from the OS reading and resizing the document (for formats that MacOS reads correctly). The icons are being made by Photoshop – all but one. In Photoshop CS6 under Preferences > File Handling, there is a check box for Image Previews. When a user selects Always Save, then the check box for Icon is also selected. (It used to also include Thumbnails and Full Size.) In my example image the top row has Icons all made by Photoshop and all are the same but they are all wrong and incorrect, even my original image. Since EktaSpaceRGB is a relatively large color space Photoshop is doing something incorrect when profiles are assigned to an image. All the generated Icons have the same Flat mis-assignment of some smaller gamut profile. In the bottom row the only Icon Made by the Finder is the one in the bottom right corner, that is the only Icon with Correct Color. I turned off the Preference in Photoshop to build the Icon for that file. The other 3 Icons in the bottom row were also made by Photoshop and yet are still not correct. Each of those 3 files that were converted do show differences, and the Finder is reading the Icon made by Photoshop and the Finder is showing the differences – there are a slight differences in highlight or quarter tone areas, hue and saturation changes, and a darker density. Seven Icons made by Photoshop, all incorrect. One Icon made by the Finder that is finally correct. Perhaps John Gnagey, if he his around, could comment on the Finder/ Operating System and how they access image Icons, but based on my visual test it does appear the Finder is simply reading the Icon written by Photoshop. This is some of the weirdness I am seeing, any test image that is assigned a profile in Photoshop CS6 and saved with a thumbnail, the Finder uses a flat and incorrect thumbnail. This even happens with an image that was saved with the correct EktaSpace RGB profile. All these flat Finder icons look the same but I can not determine which profile it is defaulting to. However, any test image that I convert to a profile, the Finder shows a closer match but gives me 3 different thumbnail results for 3 separate profiles. Since I converted to a Profile and since the 3 profiles used in testing are quite similar in gamut - GenericRGB, sRGB, and my Display profile made with BasICColor 5 - I expected to see the same results. The file with the correct profile and the Flat icon preview in Finder, well it previews correctly in Get Info and when using Quick Look, it also displays it correctly, but the Icon is hideous. Doyle you were correct. If I turn off the Thumbnail preference in Photoshop, "Image Previews," then the Finder builds and handles the icons correctly. So, that could work for me going forward but what about the other thousands of photographic icons I have that are not being handled correctly? Is there a way, a script perhaps, that will strip out the "Image Preview" or Thumbnails made by Photoshop? I suppose Adobe Bridge would simply build new previews for any image file without a thumbnail. And Doyle, you state the with Creative Cloud version of Photoshop, version 14, that Adobe has removed the preference to save a thumbnail? What a mess. Thanks, David

Steve, I understand your comment now. I will post something to Adobe Feedback even though I think this has been going on since OS10.6 and earlier versions of Photoshop. Photoshop is doing something very weird to the Icon Preview Thumbnail. The Finder is obviously reading some changes to what Photoshop is writing. It also sounds like Photoshop has simply moved on and no longer writes a custom icon. Doyle, I will look into Path Finder. I made a jpeg and web page for those that have an interest. I find it very objectionable. http://www.lenzart.us/Icon_Nonsense.html The file is tagged but of course not all browsers will honor the profile. The original image comes from a drum scan I made. If I recall they also switched from the Display Profile to sRGB for untagged images in Safari. But again, I can not find any Apple documents on this. True ICC camera profiling solution?

Hey there - I'm looking into testing ICC profiling of our cameras (5D MkIII) here in the product studio to be used in a Capture One workflow (read: cannot use DNG profiles) and have discovered I do not have a dongle with a camera license for ProfileMaker 5. And – unfortunately – I gather the new i1 Profiler solution is no different than ColorChecker Passport in that it only can create DNG profiles. So… does anyone know of software available today that can create a true camera ICC profile with a readily-available chart like the ColorChecker? Mac10.8 and photoshop icons flat

Hi, I have searched here and there but have come up empty. Can someone shed some light on this problem for me please? My photoshop image icons look terrible with Mac OS 10.8 and Photoshop CS6. The image icons are all being incorrectly assigned sRGB and I can't make it behave any differently. When I Get Info on a file in the Finder, it does know the file is using ProPhoto, or AdobeRGB, etc., yet the thumbnail for the image in the Finder is incorrectly assigning sRGB. I understand that Mac OS 10.6 switched from Generic RGB to sRGB for untagged images. Thats all well and good but my files are tagged. Is there a fix, a solution? I hate looking at my files with this type of poor behavior. Thank you, David
