Many thanks, /dev/console is a pseudo device which gets aliased to a pty when someone calls TIOCCONS on the master side of it to take over the console (this is how the "Console" program works). The frame buffer driver is actualy accessed through the "km" tty driver, and there isn't a device node published in /dev for that. It'd be more correct to start a getty up on that devices (major # 12, minor number 0, subject to change in the future). Typically, this won't do what you expect, though, because the getty and login programs do not contain the complete logic for establishing a controlling tty and doing session management. Dave's little program in his other reply is enough to get one program up, and semi-logged in on a sesion, assuming it's compiled in the POSIX compilation environment so that the lack of the O_NOCTTY lets the console become the controlling tty for your process. Note that someone else can, if they choose, simply rip the console out from under you with TIOCCONS, since you are talking to the alias device (/dev/console) rather than the real device (/dev/km, which does not have a device node assigned to it). If they are correctly set in the pax/cpio archive, why would they need to be changed? There used to be a bug in Installer.app on Mac OS X 10.2 where owners and groups were not correctly set if you needed to have root:wheel. And yes, in this case, you had to fix the owner and group settings in the postflight script. But this has been fixed since. If you need to do some post actions to install something in /S/L/E when you conform to the recommended permissions and groups, it should be considered a bug in Installer.app, in the documentation or in the OS. I take it back. If timeing is an issue here, this solution doesn't work. A full cache update would still be missed if the file is renamed and the folder touched during the cache update. ...Duane Reading all this makes me wonder whether providing an "installkext" command as part of the system could be handy. This way we know that the kext is getting installed in the right manner and right location. Since in the short term this isn't available, the install script could check to see if the system provides the command and if it doesn't reverts back to a copy provided with the installer.
