What does this mean? How to solve it? I think you are confused. The "Kernel.framework" holds only kernel header files, nothing else. The kernel and its extensions are all "static" entities, so using "-dynamic" will not work well. Perhaps you are using other frameworks? If so, don't. The "Framework" mechanism is for user-land applications, not kernel entities. Without a bit more information, it's not easy to figure out what is going wrong. Regards, Justin -- Justin C. Hi All, I created a very simple IOKit Driver. After I added framework "Kernel.framework", compile it, it always reports: "incompatible flag -framework used (must specify "-dynamic" to be used)" Then I put "-dynamic" into linker flags, but doesn't work. If you are trying to get process death notifications, and can live with a Panther-only solution, I highly recommend using kqueue() over Mach port death notifications. But to answer the specific question you asked... These "catcher" functions are not provided in any shared libraries by default. This is for two reasons: First, the way the Mach Interface Generator (MIG) produces code, the shared library it resided in would have all sorts of unresolved references to routines you would have to provide. That doesn't work all that well with standard shared library construction techniques. We could work around this by providing fake implementation that just called dyld routines to find your real implementations (as is done with the Mach exception server "catcher" routines) except... Secondly, there are several MIG-controlled options that one may want to turn on for these routines (security tokens to identify the sender, sequence numbers for re-ordering mesages in a multi-threaded server, etc...). Enabling these change the prototypes of the functions you [the server-implementer] must provide and the prototype of the function that the MIG generated server routine (like notify_server) will dispatch to. Because these MIG options may come into play more often for Mach port notifications than for exceptions, we don't try to guess what options you would want. But in our case we don't have any IOMedia objects. Although the physical disks we use are directly connected to the machine, the logical volumes we present to the user are mounted like a network file system. We've completely avoided any integration with the IOKit. Hi Dan, I've had some fun today trying to add a call to DiskArbDiskAppearedWithMountpointPing_auto(). I started by adding it to my file system's util code after it calls the system mount(). Nothing happened and I got a MACH_SEND_INVALID_DEST error. Clearly something's going wrong in mach_msg() in the MIG layer. I then set a breakpoint in autodiskmount at DiskArbDiskAppearedWithMountpointPing_rpc(), and watched it break when I mounted an NFS volume. Interestingly, the icon appeared on the desktop before I let the call complete (how can this be?). I couldn't track down the caller from the server side of the RPC, so I triggered an NMI and did a showallstacks remotely, but couldn't see any likely candidates. I can't see any such calls in the NFS mount code. Who's making the call? The other interesting thing is that the behaviour I mentioned previously, i.e. clicking on a mount point makes a disk icon appear on the Desktop, doesn't trigger the breakpoint. I suppose this fits with your assertion that Disk Arb has no involvement in this case. It still seems to me that the real goal is to give the Finder a kick, and I can't see where Disk Arb would do this for me. Thanks for your help so far - I reckon we're getting very close! getting at the raw keycodes for a USB keyboard

Ok, I have been banging my head against this, and maybe I just don't have the right perspective for what I want to do. I have a Japanese USB keyboard that is getting some of its keycodes squashed in the USB to AKB keycode conversion. this means that a number of keys are all either dead or mapping to AKB code for 'a'. I figure no problem, I will just compile a USB keyboard driver that logs the raw keycodes somewhere so I can fix the AKB lookup table. I grab the sources, and after a bit of wrangling I got the USB keyboard to compile. I uncomment the extant kprintf() statements, and try the new driver only then realizing I have no idea how to get to the output. I do some searching, and discover that I should also be able to use the kernel printf() or log() function calls to get the logging somewhere I know about, but I have been completely unsuccessful on getting these to compile in. I can seem to figure out which headers I should use, and what if any changes I need to make so that everything links and builds nicely. I'm sure this is extremely simple, but I just can't figure out where I should be looking and what the canonical/best way to go about getting the information I want is. I'm not even sure if I should be trying to replace to keyboard driver to get the support I am after or if there is a better way to fix my issues. The things you lose by doing this for a local volume is being able to rename it from the Finder and I think there are 1 or 2 other subtle things that I can't recall right now. DiskArb in 10.2 is definatly lacking for people doing non-media based file systems. DiskArbDiskAppearedWithMountpointPing_auto(); It's not possible to publish a custom volume icon out of the VFS layer for the moment, however, you can experiment with putting an icon at the root of volume itself, ".VolumeIcon.icns", at some point before telling Disk Arbitration. I have not tried it myself. Finder noticed a mount point and registered it with DiskArb. Disk Arbitration has no involvement, actually. It is just Finder. If that's all there is to it, we should be able to achieve what we want by calling DiskArb from our mount code right after the mount succeeds.
