I'm using an application called Iceberg to make packages. I'm trying to make a package of the Microsoft Office Update 11.2.0 So I can remotely distribute it to my users. I am able to make the package And send it remotely, but the package seems to just copy the updater in the users hard drive. Once the package is successfully sent, I have to manually launch the installer. Is there a way I can send it remotely and have it automatically install by itself? Thank you Kathy Gach Schawk Inc. We would like to customize the default installation directory to match where the user installed the particular CS2 application. Adobe provides a default installation directory of course, but the user may have installed the application in a different directory and we would like our installer to reflect that change. So my question is how can we change the default installation directory? Would the InstallerPlugins framework do the trick? If so, where can I find some more documentation on that framework? The names on disk for standard locations are the same regardless of the current language used by the user account. The Finder and other applications use a number of mechanisms to display localized names instead of the real file system names. See LaunchServices documentation and LSCopyDisplayNameForRef()/ LSCopyDisplayNameForURL() for the standard way to get the correctly localized name of a file or folder in code. To test this create a new user and configure it to use some other language (i.e. German). You will find that: a) The /Applications directory is now displayed localized to "Programme"; b) if you do a get info in the Finder you'll see that it is still named /Applications; c) if you use fast user switching to additionally log in to your English account you'll see that the name on disk has not changed and you can see the same folder having two different display names at the same time, depending on which user is looking at it. This is one relativly cool feature of Mac OS X. (It does not scale well when using Aliasses though, but that should not concern you.) This email sent to site_archiver(a)lists.apple.com

Are you saying, that if i put in /Applications, this is what it is always called on the disk, and it is Finder that makes it appear in the correct locale ? My concern with making the pkg files default to /Applications was that this may be called something different on other languages. A hidden folder .Install containing: common.pkg, en.pkg and de.pkg Install English.mpkg refers to common.pkg and en.pkg Install Deutsch.mpkg refers to common.pkg and de.pkg The problem is, the .pkg files don't seem to obey the mpkg's default location, which is /Applications for Install English. This means the game ends up being installed to / if the user doesn't explicitly select somewhere to install it. What am I doing wrong here ? I can't hard-code a default location of /Applications in the pkg files, as this default location would be different on the German install. I made sure there was no default location specified in the pkg's Info.plist files, but this still happens. Your best bet is to make the commong.pkg and en.pkg relocatable and have the same default location (/Applications). The en.pkg would contain ./SomeApp.app/Contents/Resources/en.lproj or whatever. By default when the user installs, both common.pkg and en.pkg will install into /Applications. If the user chooses a different location, they will both inherit the same location. As for en.pkg and de.pkg having the same default location. I am not sure why this is a problem. /Applications is named as such on all machines, it is just that the name is localized in Finder and open dialogs to be in German. Hopefully that clears things up. If I run my preinstall script from the terminal, it works. Why??? It's like the installer is ignoring the script. What this means is that if you try the package once, then the next time you install it, it will be an upgrade and the preupgrade script will be run instead. A preflight script runs for install and upgrade and runs before any packages are installed (if you have 2 packages, the preflight for the second package runs before the first package installs). Chris I set the resources folder to be a folder I've named "Resources". In that folder is a single script named "preinstall". It has it's executable bit set. The preinstall script simply creates a file at the root directory, so that I can verify that it really did execute. It's a dummy testing script. Inside my built package, I see a folder named "Resources". Within this folder is a script named "preinstall". It's directly within "Resources", not within any sub-dir. When I run my package, guess what happens. Well, everything is installed but the script is not run! If I go to the terminal and try running the preinstall script, it runs just fine. Unless I can run scripts from PackageMaker, my installer won't be any good, so I'd have to find some other way to install this app, because I need to run scripts.
