If the application is in /Applications, then something different from root:admin (775/664) is probably wrong. Yeah, it seems that way, but the application is not mine and it seems to be installed with the login users' permissions. Where is the application supposed to be installed? If you need to change the permissions on some folders that already exists, there is a flag to do so in Apple's package format (see the Info pane if you're running PackageMaker on 10.2, the Settings pane if you're using a 3rd party application). I tried that, but it only worked on three of the four machines I tested it on. But - the application seems especially picky about the permissions on these files I am installing. I added a postflight script that changed the ownership of my files to match the application's, and all is well now. This email sent to site_archiver(a)lists.apple.com

As with all installers, the permissions (and owner/group) depends on the location of the application. If the application is in /Applications, then something different from root:admin (775/664) is probably wrong. If the application is in ~/, then the owner and group are either (user_id:user_id or user_id:staff) depending on the OS version you're running. My download file has a .dmg extension, not a .pkg. My user is not given enough of a hint that the Installer will spring open. If the user cannot see the continuity, there remains the causal disconnect of the reaction of the computer appearing as an autonomous action on the part of the computer, and it'll appear that there /is/ no continuity. The thing about continuity is that it's perceptual: either you can see it or it doesn't exist to you for all intents and purposes. More info: so after install on a user's i386 machine, the installer has changed the ownership from "me" to him automatically. All works fine. For some reason, on his G4, this DOES NOT happen. You can see some of the potential already with 10.4. The link doesn't need to be to a multi-megabyte disk image. The link can be just to the distribution script, which is typically less than 10 kB. The Installer should launch just as quickly as opening a new window in Safari. In 10.4, a bare distribution script like I describe is pretty limited, but you can see the direction we're going with it. Actually, we've gone to great lengths to make sure that's safe. In some configurations, it's possible to click on a link in a web page and have the link open as a new installer window. This isn't any different than clicking on a mailto: link to send an email, or an FTP URL that opens in the Finder. When the user clicks on the link in Safari and clicks ok to the security question, both files are downloaded and unzipped, both dmgs are mounted, but only one of them goes on to auto-launch the .pkg in the Installer. One of the images contains only the .pkg file. The other image contains other files in addition to the .pkg file. Other than that, I can see no significant difference. Is the presence of the other files preventing the auto-launch of the Installer?
