I hope I didn't choose bad search parameters to research that in the list. Also I present my apologies in advance if the question has been answered previously. In that case I'd appreciate it if you post a link for that post. I've packaged an installation to be installed by an administrator for all users in the /Library folder. That is a very easy and intuitive setup. I must commend the engineers developing Packagemaker for that. I even quit the application of concern and restarted it during the installation process. That was easy too. Though, I wish if there was an action that would prompt the user for accepting the quit action at the time of the installation. However, I got stuck when I was trying to grant the user to choose between current account Library installation and root Library installation. I did use "$HOME/Library" and it installs in the root directory alright, but under a directory called, well you've guessed it, /$HOME/Library. I used the "~" and the same thing happened. Of course, the current user doesn't need administrator password to install in his directory, but I read that this is a glitch that will be fixed. So, is there an easy way to do such setup? There might be circumstances where packages are compared by Bundle ID, but I am not sure if those things actually happen. Anyway, when the installer finds a receipt with the same name (or Bundle ID?) it goes into "update mode." The "Install" button (until very recently) changes to say "Update," and the installer compares the bill of materials for this package with the bill of materials for the receipt, and anything in the receipt but not in the new package is deemed "obsolete" and deleted during installation. This is logged. Effectively this means that if you ship MyProduct.pkg, and you want to ship an upgrader package that does NOT contain all the files that were in the original package, DO NOT use the same name or bundle ID. At Apple, most packages follow the pattern: - iDVD.pkg (installs ALL of iDVD, is for iDVD 5, 6, 7) - iDVD_71.pkg (installs some files, which presumably upgrade some previous versions of iMovie to version 7.1) Rarely, in some unfortunate cases, things get so screwed up we delete the package receipts of old versions, presumably putting down a new receipt. Pretty often, we delete an entire app before installing a new copy. NOTE that we go pretty far to make sure we don't delete customer- generated stuff. So in the case of iDVD, we try pretty hard to preserve the "Themes," which are sometimes inside iDVD.app, because the customer might have paid money for them, or made them. Relative component paths and relocatable flag

This needs to be installed on both Leopard and Tiger. For my one sub-package if the "Install:" path is set to be relative then I always lose the state of the "Allow Relocation" option under the component. I do not wish my installation to be relocatable and always clear this flag. Everything works fine as long as the "Install:" path is an absolute path. This however causes build issues since my build gets farmed out to different build machines and potentially different paths. Is there a solution for this issues using relative paths? can I use environment variables as part of the absolute path? copy the components to a known location ( ie /tmp )? other thoughts? My problem is that the permissions are not taken into account: whatever permissions /path/to/root has, packagemaker ignores it and sets it to standard permissions.
