I did not see a reply on the list to your query.

Yes there is a way to send an email directly from OS X.

Here is a ref to the mac section of the O'Reilly site.

The last two tutorials on Learning the Terminal in OS X describe what needs to be done to set up the system and mail. Once done, then do shell script in the Standard Additions or shell in the OS X Power Additions osax will work.
