Thanks for the responses to my question about password dialog OSAX. I need
it to work in OS X and I didn't realize I already had an OSAX that did just
this thing - System OSAX ver1.0.8

I use the OSAX "Ask Password". It puts up a dialog box in which the typed
characters are displayed as bullets. I know that there are encryption OSAX
out there but this has worked well for me.
