For anyone interested, I've written a small scriptable application called
Play Sound <http://MicrocosmSoftware.com/playsound/>. It runs in both Mac
OS 9 and Mac OS X, and plays sound files and system sounds by name or
resource ID. It's freeware and the source code is included. Enjoy.
