Ah. That explains it.

It just can't get'entire contents' of a folder with somewhere around 300 items (or a little less).

It seems in the current MacOS X it simply times out.

it also seems that every item, with no qualifier, fails every time. At least it timed out on a directory with 24 items in it and simply adding "whose name contains "a" where "a" was something every file contained caused it to work.

Very odd behavior.
