The -a is for "attributes" and there are others that can be set.
But. . .
Those HFS and HFS+ conventions may be ignored in general by OS neXt in favor of UNIX conventions that names starting with a dot are invisible.
Some complete directories are hidden by inclusion in /.hidden - a text file.
