It seems to me that since theSource is a string, it shouldn't have the outer quotes, and the inner quotes shouldn't be escaped. What's the story?

The result box always shows the quotes around a string. Try this: display dialog the source

Further, the fact that the result window automatically quotes and escapes strings can be very handy... if you ever had a particularly difficult string to escape, here's what I do:

Type it in a text editor
Copy it
In Script Editor (or Smile) run:
   the clipboard data

Now copy your newly escaped string from the results box
