<SIGH>...okay...Automator is not a magic spell. It requires hooks IN THE APP
YOU ARE AUTOMATING. The easiest way to WRITE THOSE HOOKS is to make your app
scriptable.

No, but the people WRITING automator actions are going to look, and from
what I saw at Macworld Expo, the simplest way to write Automator actions is
with AppleScript Studio. Sal was demo'ing some really neat actions he had
created for PowerPoint.
