Locating files on a server volume

What's the simplest, easiest, quickest way of locating a file(s) on a server volume? The shell "locate" command doesn't work because it's database seems to contain only the local drives. Plus, the database would have to be updated before actually searching for the file. "Find" can locate files on a server volume but it's woefully slow.

There is the "FindFilesX" application (http://microcosmsoftware.com/findfilesx/) Is that pretty much the only practical option?
