Andrew,

Try something like this (untested, and you'll need actual files to make this
work):

set file2open to "Macintosh HD:file2open.jpg"
set droplet to "Macintosh HD:myCleverDroplet"

tell application "Finder"
open file file2open using application file droplet
end tell
