Why not just check for read-only status then? Checking for free space is no good, I've seen CD/DVDs that show tons of free space, depending how they were burned.

Also, if it's a droplet then you can try the embedded osax trick and use Akua or another osax with a relevant command. Frankly, I would reconsider and try to at least install Akua as a standard on your Macs - it'll save your life a thousand times over and if your IT guys won't include it as a standard component, using URL Access or AppleShare you can make a pretty easy auto-installable OSAX handler. Just think about it, in the long run you'll save yourself much stress, more than it might even cost you to go up against IT :)
