You'd see a file there called mbox. which is precisely what you are describing.

But if you were to look for it in the Finder you wouldn't be able to find it.

Well, actually if you command-click (or right click with a multi button mouse) on INBOX.mbox and choose "show package contents" you can access mbox and open it with any text editor.
