This sounds good, but will I get back the two years of emails (on my
OS9 drive) which Entourage apparently overwrote with the three weeks
of emails on the other (my OSX) hard drive?

It should reduce substantially when you rebuild the database!
If you've not tried it, close all MS Office applications and alt-click on
the Entourage icon (in the finder or dock). Choose 're-build'. It will make
a copy of the database (called old-database) and leave you with a smaller
current one. If there is no problem with the new one (I've never had any
data loss0 trash the old one.
