But this simply isn't true any more, John. I know you pioneered the effort
to use raw codes, and did an immense service to all of thereby, although
Emmanuel's method, arriving slightly later, is easier to use.
But Apple _did_ understand the problem, and did introduce 'on using terms
from', which is much, much simpler to use and understand than any of raw
code methods. If I recall correctly, it even works on pre-OS 9 machines as
long as it's been compiled post-OS 9.
So for the particular question asked by the originator here - tell by
variable - you simply don't need raw codes at all any more. You can just
forget about them.
Now, if you need raw codes for some other reason, that's a different story.
Then what you say applies, except that Smile is free, and the raw codes -
aside from native AppleScript, non-application terms - are easily available
via Smile.
