I realize that. Your response is a more specific rebuttal to John Welch's
assertion (that the function provides a remedy for the problem of files of
one type masquerading as files of another type) than is mine, which you've
included as a quote.
My point is simply that the first-time launch alert's inextricable link to
the Launch Services database poses an inconvenience that I would like to
eliminate by introducing a separate method for its control.
