I recently asked ...
I can't find any documentation on this, but perhaps creation date
< mod date is enforced by the file system.
Does anyone know of any documentation on this? Or, perhaps it's a bug?
I still haven't found any documentation, but I did do some
experimenting, and found ...
1. If you set the mod date of a file to a date preceeding its current
creation date, both the mod date and creation date are set to the
same date.
2. This allows you to write the creation date of a file under special
circumstances even though it's supposed to be read-only.
I tried and was successful at setting the dates of email files to:
creation date = date sent
mod date = date received
using two 'set modification date of ...' commands.
3. But, then I found that the 'date received' of a message isn't what
I thought. I thought it would be when the message arrived at my
computer. No. It's when the message arrived at my ISP's server. And
the message file's creation date has no relation to reality: Mail
seems to be copying the message to a new file every so often. I'll
stick with 'date sent'.
