Yes, but if you do this as user root on another user's plist, you may end with that plist being owned by root.
Of course, this may also be a wanted side-effect;.
Otherwise, by using


   sudo -u someuser defaults write ...

in someuser's logout hook should allow to really act as if someuser was writing his own preferences.

The reason I try this is that the osascript LogoutHook stopped working on my G5 box. I don't know why, it still works on my Intel MacBook.


Huho... perhaps should we go off-list here (until an explanation is found), as this may quickly become OT (tm).
As a starting point, could you:
- tell me the OS versions on your G5 and MacBook
- send a copy of your current version of the logout hook
- send a copy of the latest version that was running on both boxes, if any
- think very hard at any other things that may have changed ;-)
