This apparently works fine, or at least I thought so, returning things like
"en_us" or "de_de"; however, lately it's not tracking too well. Currently
I'm set up for German, and in fact all the menus etc. are appearing in
German, only my technique is still returning "en_us". This is the case on at
least two of my machines, so I'm thinking that there must be a better way.

Thinking that perhaps System Events just hadn't gotten the message somehow,
I killed it and restarted it, but that made no difference.

And in fact I have seen an alternative way somewhere, but I have so many
snippets of AppelScript in my mind, and I can't remember where I saw it, but
it basically used System Preferences to determine the language, and I'm
thinking this has to be better than system info.

Thanks in advance.

It works fine here. Check your machine to know that everything is as you thing it is. Make sure that the system is really set to "de_de". It, system info, is not run by SE. It is a scripting addition.
