Has anyone successfully used the function object_getInstanceVariable() ?

Yes - but I observed the same behavior that you did. I've been getting consistent behavior by treating the "value" parameter as "void *", instead of the documented "void **".

I stepped through my program with debugger and found out, that it is not working as documented.

Off hand, I'd say it's the docs that are incorrect. There's probably a non-trivial amount of code out there that would break if the function were made to conform to the docs.
