Hi Ruslan,

Very interesting. Perhaps when it is complete this would provide a valuable alternative for obj-c developers. For this particular application, I am not going to C++ route, nor do I think your licensing fees match the scope of many shareware applications ($499.95 per seat isn't it?). I would think if I released at $15 app, it would not make more than $1500 unless it was extremely successful. Higher end commercial applications are a different story, and I can see the merit in what you are offering there. Perhaps you could elaborate on your licensing (on or off the list).

I think something built into the cocoa API's would encourage more development in this db arena, and perhaps introduce some standards across applications.

Cheers,

Ian

I know this topic has been brought up in many forms on this lists, but
I wish to bring it up yet again as I have personally reached a point in
developing an application (commercial) which could really use some
built in cocoa db support. It is not the type of application which
could single out power users, who would necessarily know how to install
a db server. Nor would I expect them to go and buy a database
application or install one, just to use my little cocoa app. Something
already in Cocoa would have been nice. Archiving an array of
dictionaries does not seem like the ultimate answer to writing
data-based applications in Objective-C.

I am aware of some of the wrappers some good folk have put together for
db's such as MySQL, and this is really good work! However, I am quite
surprised (please correct me if I am wrong), that Panther has not
included any new API or support for some kind of built-in db
functionality (or the EOF from Web Objects I have been reading about).
Am I right, is there still nothing built into cocoa for this?

PS. I don't use Real Basic for development, but I must admit they have
added a valentina db or something which seems to allow developers to
get around this prob.

Hi Ian,

Please let me inform this list about Valentina database.
Okay? Please do not kick me for this. :-)

Valentina database engine was introduced in 1998 year as pure C++ engine.
It works on MAC OS Classic, OS X, Windows.

During 1998-2002 years was added many wrappers to use Valentina engine from
different IDEs/languages: C, Java, COM, .NET, REALbasic, Director, xCards.
We work now on PHP plugin.

Valentina ADKs was positioned as simply the best choice for development of
Applications with Embedded Database Engine. Because of
1) super fast speed of Valentina.
2) unique set of features including also
SQL, regEx, encryption, compression, ...
support of Relational model, ...
support of Navigational model, ...

3) royalty free license.

--------------------------------------
In July of 2003 we have introduce Valentina Server alpha.
And clients for C++, Director, COM, REALbasic, PHP (in nearest days)

Again, Valentina developers (which are used with mySQL also) say that
Valentina offer much more simple way to achieve the same targets, easy
installation and support.

With Valentina Server we offer special Embedded Server license.
We believe it is the best for Application Developers that want develop and
DISTRIBUTE cross-platform client/server APPLICATIONS.

Now even SHAREWARE developers can easy develop and distribute true
client/server Application! It is very easy technically and has low price.

---------------------------------------
That was good news.

Problem is that we really, up to now do not have yet Objective-C wrapper to
Valentina. I have on hands draft of such V4Cocoa SDK, ready on 80-90% I
think. But it is not finished.

I hope that in the next year we will finish it (may be with help of some
Objective-C guru from this list :-) If somebody want help to speed up this
process you are welcome.

So we will introduce
Valentina for Obj-C local
Valentina client for Obj-C

In the same time, right now some developers develop Cocoa apps and simply
use C++ Valentina SDK.
