you an customize this now by implementing your own KVC validation.
it's interesting that KVC validation would do this automatically with
the formatter.

you're correct that it isn't documented anywhere. I didn't even know
about it. I'd suggest filing a bug on the behavior (and then send me
the number so I can track it).
