Why can't I instantiate a subclass of NSArrayController?

I've been trying to work with the new Controller Layer and would like to add some additional functionality to some of the controllers rather than sticking it off in a separate 'MainController' class. But for some reason when I subclass NSArrayController I can't instantiate it in IB. I can instantiate subclasses of NSObject as usual and I can create files for my NSArrayController subclass, but the Instantiate menu item is grayed out. I have seen other posts here where people mention subclassing these new classes and overriding methods so I know it must be possible.

Thanks,
Kurt
