OT: maxproc limit

I realize this is a bit off topic, but I've search through a number of archives of lists that seemed more appropriate and came up blank. I'm hoping that someone here has hit this limit and knows a way around it.

Back in 10.2, I made some changes to the startup scripts on my box to increase the maximum number of processes for the system to 1000 and per user to 500. I run a lot of different stuff on my box, so the current limit is a real issue. I've tried adding:

kern.maxproc=1000
kern.maxprocperuid=500

to the /etc/sysctl.conf file and this does seem to increase the maxproc for the system, but not the per user limit. I've tried a number of ulimit types of things in /etc/rc.common, but still seem to be set to a limit of 100 process at the user level.

If someone has a suggestion as to how to get around this it would be very much appreciated.
