Should I upgrade to 1.4.2 on Mac OS X 10.3.1?

Hi, I'm developing a Cocoa application using Xcode and Java. At this time, the application worked on my PC at work using JDK 1.4.2. However, it doesn't work here because I may be missing some required certificates. BTW, the application
works as follows:

1) obtain file, userid, and password from the user
2) encode the user id and password
3) establish a http connection to an https server
4) send the request
5) await the response

I decided to move the project over to Xcode because I wanted to build a nice GUI with IB and possibly drop Java once I have something working. In any case, I'm wondering, if I should upgrade from JDK 1.3.1 to 1.4.2?

Thanks in advance,

-Conrad
