Thanks to all who chimed in with the solution. I shouda known...

Using Interfacebuilder, I control-dragged from the file's owner to my app object, saved, rebuilt and suddenly it all started working! Of course, that's what I was SUPPOSED to have done - but it's always great when you get something going that just wasn't responding to attempts to move ahead.
