Best way to communicate with php script?

Greetings,
I'm currently working on an application that will connect to a php
script and send data back and forth i wanted to know what would be the
best way of implementing it? I've looked around and there seems to be
about 4 different ways to accomplish this, i would also like to be able
to tell if the connection times out, isn't available etc...
