I suspect that some of this discussion is caused by people who are (now that
OS X has become more popular) trying to port Windows applications to OS X.
They often seem to either have "requirements" that say "make it work the
same on OS X as it does on Windows" or else are trying to save time by using
an implementation that uses the same techniques they use on Windows.
