I've developed yet. All my stuff is "freeware." I'd simply like to
make it
possible for people to make a donation if they feel so inclined.
Donationware never really works.
This is a bit of an overgeneralization. It perhaps doesn't work if your
goal is to make a great living off of shareware. If you just want to
make a few bucks on the side, then you might say it works.
On the downside of eSellerate, their SN generation thing is *very*
easy to crack and they were being complicated when I asked about
implementing my own (they have to compile your algorithm as a DLL and
link it into their server - I mean, wtf?! Can you say, "bad
architectural decision" - anyway, since it takes manpower & effort
their end they don't do it unless you're a high volume seller).
They have quite a range of serial number generation options (I'm a
customer), so perhaps their default SN scheme is 'easy to crack', but
there are many options to choose from, including providing them with a
list of your own generated serial numbers. Also, since you generally
only want to keep honest people honest, it doesn't really matter IMHO
if they are crackable easily. Everything is crackable. I've had serial
number schemes cracked and sales kept going up.
eSellerate are also not terribly cheap, and the lag thing is very
annoying and stupid.
They are cheaper than Kagi and provide a LOT more bang for the buck. If
you don't need all the services, then maybe they are too expensive, but
if you use even half of them, it's well worth the money. And as one of
their reps mentioned, the lag thing is a myth, not reality. This is how
it works: Two weeks after the end of a month of selling product, you
get a check. I consider that quite reasonable and they are always on
time.
Also, very much on the plus side, they have great Cocoa example code
that you can use to integrate into your project. As far as I know, no
other company does that.
