Merchant accounts are generally only cheaper if you're relatively high
volume, AFAIK.
But I guess then you have to be concerned with collecting taxes such
as VAT; sales tax AFAIK in the U.S. doesn't need to be collected on
intangible products.
You have to collect tax in the state you're registered in, I think, or
something like that. And you should in theory be registered with an EU
member state to pay tax to them, although I don't see what they can do
about it if you don't.
In fact, I think that unless you're doing a huge volume (but more than
a small volume) you could even just process transactions offline and
bite the bullet on some losses due to bogus credit card numbers.
How would you go about "processing transactions offline"? Sounds like a
high overhead in manpower to me... :-)
