Hi James,

This brings up an interesting point -- what can and cannot be used from the Apple Icons?
For example, my application Icon uses the camera from the Image Capture application. But I don't use the whole Icon from Image Capture. Is this acceptable usage?

In previous versions of the Human Interface Guidelines, there was a statement about not using apple Icons. I couldn't find that statement in the present version.

Well, there are 2 main issues here:

1: Apple invested a bunch of money in designing these icons, and they don't want the icons to be 'abused'.
2: The developers want to use some icons that the user recognizes, so the user won't have to be mistaken about what a button does.

There is a problem having "open source icons": The design-style won't be exactly the same, although there would always be icons available.

I figured that it's best to try getting as close to the 'system theme' as possible, because the icons like "Customize Toolbar", "Print", "Colors", "Fonts", etc.. should still look like they belong to the toolbar. We're forced to make something that looks like Apple's icons, but we can't copy.

I think the question about what we can copy and can't copy, was asked a long time ago on this list. Ofcourse we can use NSToolbarPrintItemIdentifier and friends, but I think that we're not at all allowed to use any images (eg. steal icons) from any of Apple's applications.

If anyone at Apple can give better answers to this question, I'm very interested in knowing more.

Love,
Jens
