Everything you see on screen is contained in a window.
A lot of things that you might not think of as windows, are in fact
windows: The Dock is a window, every application icon on the dock is a
window, the menu bar is a window, a menu opened from the menu bar is a
window, every icon on the desktop is a window...
The windows in Stickies also windows, even though they have a slightly
non-standard appearance from regular Cocoa/Aqua windows.

So, if you want something to appear on screen, you need to put it in a
window first.
