I'd file a bug. As a workaround, you might test either
initFileURLWithPath:path or initWithScheme:NSFileScheme
host:{nil|@"localhost"} path:path to see if they produce compatible
results.

[demime 0.98b removed an attachment of type application/pkcs7-signature which had a name of smime.p7s]
