Yes, but a newspaper with images does not hold references to external
things.
I think a more appropriate analogy would be, for instance, my car
insurance certificate. It contains a reference to my car (i.e., a
small set of alphanumeric characters that uniquely identify my car).
When I do a reproduction of my insurance certificate using a
photocopier, the copy has the same content as the original: they both
refer to the same car. The car itself is not duplicated (that would be
quite cool but this is another story).
Well, it would be cool if you could make copies of your car that simply
(especially if you could make improvements in the process ;-).
However, it would be terrible if, in turn, you couldn't make a copy of
an insurance certificate without making a new car. Because then you
could never have more than one insurance certificate for the same car,
it would always be referring to a new/different car!
(Unless of course, it is a special immutable car that you cannot drive,
get into or out of, fuel up or repair)
