I was having a similar issue with getting images to show in my nib file
Images tab. I learned that a nib file only shows the images that belong
to all the all the Targets the nib file belongs to. In my case, my nib
belonged to an old Target i was no longer using (but hadn't deleted),
and I'd added images only to my new Target. So, they didn't show up.
Which doesn't explain the odd UI, but I did notice it (Images tab turns
gray, indicating it's getting ready to display, but doesn't turn blue")
about the same time, so you might look into this. When I had
straightened out my project memberships (and relaunched IB, I think),
the odd UI stopped occuring.
