Overlay window & keydown

I have a window i'm using as a desktop overlay my problem is i have to
call [window setIgnoresMouseEvents:YES]; so it overlays properly
but when ever I press any key it just beeps I need to check for certain
keys but the keyDown event doesn't seem to be called?
