What if you're wrong?
A recent version of Microsoft Office for Mac (not sure about the
current one) tried to use a network connection to detect whether
another copy with the same serial number was running and shut itself
down if it detected such a situation. It did it badly and would shut
down correctly licensed software running on a one-system "network".
Lucky it didn't do anything too extreme and that its method was easy to
short-circuit.
