NSButton's background turning white instead of transparent?

I've got these toolbar buttons, which aren't a proper toolbar, they are just NSButtons.

I've set an icon for them, which has a transparancy mask. The transparancy works as expected, partially opaque pixels let the background partially show through, which is nice.

The NSButtons are borderless.

Unfortunately, when I click on the buttons, the background turns white, instead of transparant.

I'm not sure how to fix this. If I were to do this without advice, I'd simply override the drawing methods and draw the image as it is supposed to be drawn. But that doesn't seem right to me, surely there is an easier way?
