Does anyone know what the problem might be?

It seems that array controllers set up in IB need one turn through the run loop to populate themselves.

You can work around this problem by using performSelector:withObject:afterDelay: with a delay of 0.0 (zero).

Of course, if anyone has a better solution, I'd be happy to hear about it.
