John,
I suggest that you return to the ADC web site and look through the sample
code again... and possibly do a little reading in the QuickTime Sequence
Grabber manual. Sample code like hackTV and MeterTest are examples of
exactly what you want to do.
You might also try reading up on Core Audio and experimenting with the
SimplePlayThru sample code.
If you really are a newbie, then start with the QuickTime intro doc.
QuickTime has nearly 2500 function calls in the API and unless you have a
clue as to what you're doing it can be quite overwhelming in the
beginning...
