This is just a guess, but from the Cocoa side there's probably some DOM
manipulation selectors or something similar that are only in 1.2 or
later which you could check for the presence of. I don't know on the
Java side tho.

this might be a trivia question, but the problem is driving me nuts.
It would be better to know from the Java as the webcontent viewing
options can be disabled.
